Unless you’ve been living in a cave recently, you must have heard of the extraordinary success of Australian film-maker, Rhonda Byrne’s DVD “The Secret”.

The DVD opens with the statement “As above, so below – as without, so within.” Although, many astrologers have quoted this as an antique license to practice their art, I think this statement says more than “astrology works, folks!” The quote actually refers to the Law of Attraction “The Secret”. The movie suggests that the ancients were alerting us to the fact that EVERYTHING responds to this Universal law – human beings, cats, horses, flowers, trees, rivers, mountains, planets, Universes, etc. It works through vibration. And everything from the electron to the Universe vibrates. And that includes you and me.

The basic premise of the Law of Attraction is that like attracts like, which means that a thing will attract to it something else that vibrates at a similar frequency. For example, a droplet of crystal on a chandelier will vibrate when a specific note is struck on a keyboard because vibrationally they are attuned to one another. If we extend this idea to ourselves we can see how we can only attract things, people and circumstances into our lives that are attuned to our individual vibration. While this may seem an outrageous idea in this day and age, mystics have been talking about it for millennia.

The LOA operates on every level of existence. Quantum physics states that the universe and everything within it is made of energy and this energy vibrates. And all the molecules, cells, bodily substances, animals, trees, planets, stars, are all “made” of this same energy. Each of these things vibrates to its own particular resonance – thus a bird will resonate in a bird way and a tree in a tree way. Now, it seems on a human level that this energy vibrates in response to our thoughts. So each time a thought is thought, a vibration is caused to happen. Therefore the mechanism through which Attraction works is our minds and the function through which it works is thought. In other words our thoughts create our lives. We are approaching a global paradigm shi* where we can begin to realise that everything is made up of thought. Thought creates energy and energy creates matter. Thoughts become things!

The LOA is neutral and makes no value judgments about our thoughts – it simply responds. There is no punishing God out there to point out that we’re getting things wrong. Universal laws simply exist – it’s what we do with them, as thinking beings, that makes the difference. The Law of Gravity is the same – whether we’re saints or sinners – we hit the ground when we fall! So, if you’re jumping out of a plane – wear a parachute! Once we understand this vital piece of information about life that we ARE attracting all the time – we can choose to attract something that will take us to where we want be in life – rather than attracting by default and remaining stuck.

So, what happens in our lives flows directly from where we put our attention. In other words, as we think, so our lives will unfold. And our thoughts become things. We literally become and get what we think about most. And what we think about most comes directly from an internal map of our expectations. This map is conditioned by outside events and our family history. Life looks just like our parents told us it would. As the wit said “If I hadn’t believed it, I wouldn’t have seen it.” We project the movie of our map onto the screen of reality. When we live unconsciously from this internal map, we do so in default mode and call it “fate”.

We talk a lot about fate in astrology. We are so easily seduced by our own intricacies, our stories, and our patterns. They keep us ensnared and unable to move on. Every time we notice the repetitions, cycles and coincidences we call them fate, as if they make us special, picked out by the “Gods”. And it’s not true. What we are actually observing is ourselves attracting the sameold same-old. It’s enchanting and it disempowers us by tying us to the past and keeping us asleep. For me, the important piece about being alive is to work through story, to glimpse the meta-level, the Universal intent, beyond and accepting responsibility for ourselves.

Modern materialism and religions strip us of the need to feel responsible for ourselves. The new sciences don’t supply us with answers but they do suggest that however we want our lives to be is squarely up to us. We make our own decisions. There is no-one else to blame for what happens to us. Higher science and mysticism both now agree that reality is being created from inside our own minds. There is no “out there” out there. And the more we look at it – the more wondrous and mysterious it becomes.
