Saturn enters Sagittarius

This is my first article of 2015 – I stared writing it on Wednesday 7th January, but was overtaken by the events that were unfolding in Paris, France. I had lived in Paris for 3 years in the 80‘s and loved the city and its people a great deal. Consequently I folded down my laptop lid and waited for the dust to settle in my own mind as to how and what to write about where we are in our cultural growth in the face of these events.

And the dust has settled – and takes me back to November 10th 1995 when Pluto entered Sagittarius. I remember it well because I was lecturing at a conference in Italy about this particular astrological event. However I was overtaken by the news just coming through that Ken Saro-Wiwa had been hanged by the Nigerian government that day.

For those of you who may not know about ken Saro-Wiwa: he was a Nigerian writer, television producer, environmental activist, and winner of the Right Livelihood Award and the Goldman Environmental Prize. He spoke out about what he perceived to be wrongdoing in his country and for that he was executed.

I guess you can see where I’m heading with this?

Saturn has just crossed the same degree – 0 SAG – on 23rd December 2014, i.e. a couple of weeks ago and a number of events, not just in Paris, but along the same theme are occurring. The Guardian reports that a Saudi blogger has just been given his first 50 lashes (of 1000!!) for expressing his liberal views of the Saudi government. He will receive 50 per week for the next 20 weeks – it doesn’t bear thinking about.

This indicates that the very first degrees of any sign are extremely potent and seem to carry a homeopathic dose of significance that will echo out throughout the sign.

I will unpack Saturn (SA) in Sagittarius (SAG) further in this article, but first would like to come back to the Uranus (UR) Pluto (PL) square that is still ongoing.

UR was first seen in 1781 heralding the birth of democracy through the American War of Independence and the French Revolution – Liberty/Fraternity and Equality being the intention inherent in both nations . In other words, Democracy, freedom of speech and freedom to worship as one chooses.

UR in Aries represents freedom of the individual – and also the urge to fight to defend those freedoms. PL in Capricorn represents the power to take hostages – on any level: of people (see Persephone), of ideas, beliefs, institutions and those things we take for granted as our rights. As these two planets are in square aspect to each other they are chafing at society at large in an attempt to change us all.

The outcome will take some years to unfold as the square will continue for another couple of years.

So this is the backdrop against which SA enters SAG:

SAG is associated with broadcasting, journalism, long distance travel, higher education, religion, foreign affairs, philosophy beliefs, large animals such as horses, lecturing and teaching in universities. Quite a package of attributes.
SAG is a Fire sign and is represented by huge bush fires that burn for miles without stopping. And indeed Sagittarians can be like this themselves- unstoppable, enthusiastic and boundless. They are famously open to new experiences and will travel the globe to get them. “Don’t fence me in” is their song. They are charming, exciting, open minded and broad in outlook. They love learning about other cultures, languages, and are often found in foreign affairs and teaching. They are also found in broadcasting and journalism. It is also a Mutable sign, thus changeable in its passions. and, guess what – Saturn’s  qualities are the opposite.

Saturn (SA) is an Earth planet, slow moving and thinking, cold, dispassionate, reasoned, controlled and practical. Jupiter rules SAG and represents expansion, SA rules contraction, narrowing  and harnessing. SA is also the accountant of the Solar System, ensuring that we pay our dues for the values of whichever sign he happens to fall in on his 29 year orbit around us. Scorpios know this, as they have already had a couple of years to find this out.

SA will remain in SAG until mid-June 2015 then re-enter Scorpio for the summer/winter months depending on which hemisphere you are residing in. He will then re-enter SAG in September 2015 where he will remain until December 2017.

I can hear all my SAG readers groan and all the Scorpios give a qualified sigh of relief. I think that the 8 weeks in June to September of SA in SC will offer all of us an opportunity to reflect on what the transit has meant for us all over the past couple of years.

Enough to say that the massacre in Paris definitely makes us think about the price journalists, teachers, religious leaders may be considering seriously now. However SAG always bounces back to find other ways of carrying on along their chosen paths.

In my next article I shall do my interpretation of what SA in SAG means for the 12 Zodiac signs.
