Venus – art, music and reason

Today we will take a good look at dear Venus as she slowly grinds her 4 month path up the mountain ranges of Capricorn, meeting Pluto, nodding nervously to Uranus across the sky, taking a friendly backward glance at Saturn, Capricorn’s ruling planet and opposing Jupiter. Then she turns direct and does it all again! All this from a very small planet – a very busy time indeed.

But first …..

Yesterday, 12th November the world lost a great Soul. The composer and mystic John Tavener (28th January, 1944) died at his home in Oxfordshire, England, aged 69. His beautiful piece “Song for Athene” was played at Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997 and touched many people with its simplicity, purity and spiritual quality.

He was a true Sun Aquarius/Moon Pisces mix. He called himself a “Universalist” recognising as he did that the underlying principles in all the major religions reflected similar basic truths. His own chosen spiritual path, Greek Orthodoxy, gave him a form within which to express his devotion to God musically. However, it did not confine his genius, as he wrote music on the Vedas, Mythology, Sufism and Islam.

He will be missed – the world needs people like him who wear their mysticism lightly on their sleeves like a badge of honour.

And now to Venus and her slow dance in Earthy Capricorn.

Venus’ orbit is more or less the same as the Sun and Mercury of around 12 months to cover the Zodiac. However, while Mercury has his retrograde dances three times a year; Venus chooses to move more deliberately and retrogrades phases for 4 months every 21 months.

The last time she did this was when she was in Gemini in 2012 – she famously crossed the face of the Sun then – something we will have to wait nearly 150 years to witness once more.

Normally, as with Mercury, we don’t usually notice the sign that Venus is passing through. They’re too quick to measure up against the weight of Saturn in a sign for nearly 3 years, Uranus for 7 years, Neptune for 15 years and Pluto for anything between 12 and 30 years depending on his elliptical orbit. Except when they go backwards.

Mercury moved forward on Sunday evening (GMT) and we all breathed a sigh of relief – however, we need to let him get his breath back before he leaps ahead once more to feel truly safe from his mischief.

Venus is happy in both earthy Capricorn and airy Gemini as she herself has a sign in each of these two elements – namely Taurus and Libra.

She has dominion over both solid, realistic Taurus and airy, diplomatic Libra. In her Taurus mode she rules the throat and neck. She has solid values and an eye for things of very high quality. She is good at music, art – particularly sculpture and pottery – and she loves her food. In her Libran mode, she likes to discuss things and reach agreements that benefit everyone. She is a relationship animal and loves her social gatherings. She may find it hard to come down on either side of her fence, preferring to sit astride and make decisions from there. In her Libran mode she rules the kidneys and the blood.

Venus through the Signs and Houses

Aries : 21st March – 20th April: Venus is placed in your 10th House of career and public profile. She rules both your 7th House of relationships and your 2nd House of personal finances. Put these three things together and we can easily see a to and fro dance around them all. Partners can have you paying out more than you would wish, or could of course, gift you with a small sum all for yourself. You may be working hard to achieve your goals and be wondering when the pay-off is coming. Those at the head of your business may be playing it safe for themselves and not giving out bonuses just yet. A time of wait and see.

Taurus: 20th April – 20th May: Venus is your ruling planet and is placed in your 9th House of higher learning, travel and religion. She rules both your 6th House of health and routine matters, and your 1st House of personal desires and drives. Put these three things together and we can easily see a to and fro dance around them all. She may bring you opportunities to travel afar or meet people from afar, who open up your horizons – slowly because you are a naturally cautious soul. You may have to get fit for a particular journey you would wish to take and that will mean a whole new set of routines on a daily basis. And yet you keep changing your mind about the whole thing until you are certain.

Gemini: 21st May – 21st June: Venus is placed in your 8th House of shared resources, taxes and mortgages. She rules both your 5th House of children and creativity, and your 12th House of self-undoing. Put these three things together and we can easily see a to and fro dance around them all. This is the season of spending a lot of money on your children and friends and the self-undoing part of the 12th House can mean that you will repent at leisure over your generosity. Then you and your partner will need to get tough with yourselves to rein it all in. However, it can also mean that you get creative with your gifts, making things instead of spending a fortune.

Cancer: 21st June – 23rd July: Venus is placed in your 7th House of relationships and partnerships. She rules both your 4th House of family and home, and your 11th House of friendships. Put these three things together and we can easily see a to and fro dance around them all. It looks like party time to me! And yet, you are torn between staying at home cosy by the fire with your beloved or getting out and about with friends who want to share the good times with you. This can upset your fine digestion as you want to please everyone – so you must ensure that you don’t get spread to thinly and exhaust yourself. Time to examine your priorities.

Leo: 23rd July – 23rd August: Venus is placed in your 6th House of health and routines. She rules both your 3rd House of siblings, neighbours and short journeys, and your 10th House of career and public profile. Put these three things together and we can easily see a to and fro dance around them all. This is a time of health consciousness, taking regular exercise before the big day, ensuring that you don’t emerge in the New Year feeling tired and unfit. Your neighbourhood or siblings could be going through changes – people leaving, new people arriving – lots of new faces to welcome, which is what you do best. Career wise this could be a good time to ensure you don’t wear yourself out taking on too much.

Virgo: 23rd August – 23rd September: Venus is placed in your 5th House of creativity and children. She rules both your 2nd House of personal finances and your 9th House of higher education, travel and religion. Put these three things together and we can easily see a to and fro dance around them all. You may have long been thinking of doing some kind of creative course or going on a foreign study trip. Or organising something like it for a child. You may need to save up your pennies to finance it. And it’s useful to remember that the Universe will always support you, if it’s the right thing for you. Trust in the planets and watch it all unfold. Once Venus shifts in the New Year, you can too!

Libra: 23rd September – 23rd October: Venus is your ruling planet and sits in your 4th House of home, family and property; she rules your 1st House of personal desires and 8th House of shared resources Put these three things together and we can easily see a to and fro dance around them all. They funnel through your desire to make changes in your living conditions, your family and your savings, mortgages, etc. This is not the time to make decisions – thank heavens, you say! When Venus leaves Capricorn in March next year, you will emerge much clearer and more decisive about your future. In the meantime, enjoy what you have and where you are – next year it will all be different and you will have changed along with it.

Scorpio: 23rd October – 22nd November: Venus is placed in your 3rd House of writing, teaching, short journeys and siblings. She rules both your 7th House of relationships and your 12th House of escape from the madding crowds. Put these three things together and we can easily see a to and fro dance around them all. This can be a time of catching with all those people you generally don’t have time to connect with through the year, which could bring some surprises. Relationships, partnerships and clients can all join in the dance and be uncertain of what they want from you. Just withdraw from the fray and spend time on your own inner work, writing and creativity. then you can emerge with new things to offer them all.

Sagittarius: 22nd November – 22nd December: Venus is placed in your 2nd House of personal finances. She rules both your 6th House of health and routines and your 11th House of friendships and projects. Put these three things together and we can easily see a to and fro dance around them all. You may be wanting to go for freedom again, but find that your finances aren’t stable enough to allow you to do that just yet. However, there’s still lots you can do over the next couple of months. You may decide to join a gym to get fit for that white water rafting you want to do. Friendships are important to you as well so why not plan to go with a group rather than on your own?

Capricorn: 22nd December -20th January: Venus is placed in your 1st House of personal desires and drives. She rules both your 5th House of creativity and children and your 10th House of career and public profile. Put these three things together and we can easily see a to and fro dance around them all. You are wanting to make changes in your personal life and aren’t sure yet how to go about it. This is how Venus works on the things we want for ourselves. It will become clearer once she moves on. You are full of ideas right now and your creativity is a rich seam to plunder. You may find that your career offers you more opportunities to express your individuality – slowly, though, as you have a strong sense of caution.

Aquarius: 20th January – 19th February: Venus is placed in your 12th House of spirituality, self-undoing and escape. She rules both your 4h House of family and domestic matters and your 11th House of groups, projects and hopes for the future. Put these three things together and we can easily see a to and fro dance around them all. You may feel that all of the above are spinning out of your control right now – are you living in the right place, following your dreams, and looking after your spiritual life as well as you might? Your family or property may make demands on you that take you far away from what you really want to be doing.

Pisces: 19th February – 20th March: Venus is placed in your 11th House of friendships, group events and hopes and wishes. She rules both your 3rd House of communication, writing and short journeys and your 8th House of shared finances, mortgages and debts. Put these three things together and we can easily see a to and fro dance around them all.

This may be a call to rein in your generosity towards your friends, especially as you may have a secret project that you would rather spend on instead. This is a good time to give yourself the freedom to write your poetry, study your mysticism and learn a new meditation program. Your shared finances will need looking at, but not alone – it’s something you need to do together. It may deepen your appreciation of each other.
