We need to talk about Neptune

Just to get us all away from the Grand Cross and Eclipses I decided to write about Neptune today. I mentioned to a friend today what I was planning and he commented “If you can get hold of him.” And in a way, that’s exactly how it is with Neptune – just like grabbing hold of a fistful of water.

However, Neptune is powerful at the moment because he is placed in his natural home, Pisces. He entered Pisces in 2012 and will stay there until 2026, which sounds kind of exact. However, knowing Neptune’s propensity for blurring edges, he was in and out throughout 2011 and will be doing the same through 2025. Backwards and forwards like the two fishes that symbolise Pisces.

Neptune is a gas giant and is associated with gas, petroleum, plastics, fishing, sailing, swimming, homeopathy, photography, psychics and seers to mention a few. You will often find those who work in these fields will have Neptune prominently placed on their birth charts.

It is also associated with those who are mystical, clairvoyant (like Edgar Cayce – the Sleeping Prophet), homeopaths, religious, artistic, musical – but also those who are drug addicts, alcoholics, escapist, who live in a dream world and are unrealistic. They too will have a strong Neptune on their birth charts – such as in hard aspect to their Sun or Moon.

So where is Neptune now, I hear you ask? It is in the first few degrees of Pisces and will spend a time with those who have their birthdays in early Virgo i.e. end of August: Pisces i.e. end of February; Gemini i.e. end of May; and Sagittarius i.e. end of November. And you may also have other personal planets in these degrees and signs – e.g. Mercury, Venus and Moon. When Neptune is writ large in this way there can be a huge upsurge of confusion, as if you’re in a fog about where your heading. This can be due to Neptune’s ability to remove your boundaries and certainties in one fell swoop. Please read at the end of the article what this means for you.

It’s almost as if you have gone from being drawn with a strong outline to being drawn with a soft and squidgy piece of chalk. Of course there is a reason for this and yet it can be somewhat discomforting to suddenly find yourself being certain about your life’s direction to becoming completely uncertain about it. And it’s worth pointing out that before you came into this life, you knew that this Neptunian event would be happening to you at this point.

This can be a long transit for you to go through – between 3 and 5 years – and yet it can also be the most extraordinary experience that you will look back on with real fondness. As long as you don’t believe that this is forever and you’re stuck in confusion. You won’t always feel confused, because you will have a new and very different clarity.

Your life, and indeed you, will change. You are likely to become less ego centred and more interested in others. The emotions I associate with Neptune are those of Divine Homesickness, that desire to transcend this reality and merge with the Universe to be at one with God. It can also bring up a real yearning for Love that is unconditional and all encompassing of the whole world. You may find that you decide to find a mystical path to follow or even start painting or writing poetry. whichever you choose you are likely to feel inspired. Instead of seeing things as wrong, you will be motivated to take a broader and kinder view.

In fact, you get a little taste of how life is for a Piscean. If you are an early Piscean, it’s almost as if you’ve come home to yourself, feeling at one with who you are; as if this is your time, your place, here, now.

Your value systems will also go through a shift – from acquiring and desiring for yourself to giving, supporting and loving others. Compassion is real the word for this. You may see suffering everywhere and feel overwhelmed by it. Just remind yourself that you are going through one of the many layers that a transit like this can bring. This feeling will subside into something manageable, but the reality of it will stay with you and drive you into doing something tangible about it. While Neptune is not known as an outgoing planet, it can certainly motivate people to start charities, fund-raise, become eco-warriors, do volunteer work in hospitals, prisons, for example.

You may go to Tibet or visit one of the many wonderful sacred sites that exist on our wonderful planet. While those around you will enjoy the experience as “something to check off their long list of places to visit”, you will be profoundly touched by the ecstatic, mystical energy that these sites offer us for our spiritual health.

I have to come clean here – to “fess” up – I love Neptune transits, and am having my own right now, as I write this article. Of course, I’ve had them before – and they always led me to explore the great mysteries of life through the many different pathways that I travelled. If you are not particularly inclined towards spirituality (if you’re reading this you must be) then it can come as a huge surprise to realise that maybe life has more to offer beyond shopping. Although shopping can be fun, too – but just not for anaesthetising yourself against what’s really going on for you. And yes – Neptune rules anaesthetics, too.

For Virgo – the energy will come through others. You may meet someone who embodies the values of Neptune; who may belong to a mystical group, be an artist, poet. They will introduce you to another way of looking at reality – but they may not hang around forever. A bit like Will ‘o’ the Wisp. – but utterly engaging and life changing for you.

For Pisces – you find the courage to follow your soul’s prompting. You start listening to your heart instead of the voice of “common sense”. You let go of hiding your thoughts and dreams and become someone who is able to grab their life with both hands.

For Gemini – you begin to wonder if you are in the right job. In fact, you may have already made that decision or “life” made it for you. This is a great opportunity for you to begin to write that novel, those poems, etc. Or even take a new training in alternative healing that will bring you a whole new career path.

For Sagittarius – you will be asking yourself if you’re living in the right place or even country. When you open your curtains in the mornings, you may wonder why you stay where you are right now. Maybe the challenge is to take the risk and go to that part of the world you’ve always wanted to go, and see what it brings you. Especially if it is a place of spirituality.
