Learning to let go – an astrologer’s view

One of the most important lessons I have learned from my studies as an astrologer is that everything that happens does so simply because it happens – and therefore everything that happens cannot be despised, only observed and perhaps understood a little more clearly.

Here in the UK we are sowing the seeds of political change, as indeed you are in the US. However, this article isn’t about politics, either British or American, as it’s not my subject. It’s the phenomenon of change that interests me and our reaction to it. Astrologers  all know that the planets change sign regularly like a series of drum beats each with their own particular rhythm. The Moon is the fastest and Pluto is the slowest. Whether or not Pluto is a planet is not a valid argument as we astrologers will tell you, we have a vast data bank of information on its collective and individual effects.

Astrologers mark sign changes with flurries of articles to various magazines and websites, predicting the most likely outcomes of each planetary cycle. So, there is already an understanding that Saturn in Virgo is likely to bring hunger to many. Virgo is the grain Goddess  – traditionally wheat, because it was the staple of our ancient symbol setters, the priest kings in the Middle East. However, ALL staples fall under Virgo’s rulership. I have always thought that Saturn in Virgo symbolised crisp bread, that crunchy, reduced, flat biscuit eaten by health fans and weight watchers.

This period will also bring stoppages in the service industries – as Virgo also rules health services, council workers and all public servants. So, we can be prepared for this. Our finances will also be managed by Saturn, who is really God’s accountant; so that we may all learn to use our resources more wisely and carefully than previously.

Saturn’s cycle is 30 years – just look back at what was happening in the late 70s and see if similar events happened then. That’s how we verify the cycles of history and check the validity of planetary symbolism. And it works, doesn’t it? Saturn is in a sign for two and a half years – it entered Virgo last September, which is, coincidentally, Virgo’s month. And, nine months on, we are getting a sense of how the next couple of years will pan out.

Similarly with Pluto’s entry into Capricorn – a much longer and slower process of 15/16 years in this particular sign. This will ensure that we really get what Capricorn is all about. Looking back on Pluto’s journey through Sagittarius, we had a new government in the UK 18 months into that period in May, 1997. The theme of the last 15 years will eventually be understood to be that truly Pluto in Sagittarian one – a  conflict of religious passions – or, I will kill you for YOUR beliefs. Pluto will probably be a couple of years into Capricorn around 2010, when we here in the UK get our new government that will then go on to reflect that sign’s energies.  And the values of conservatism, modern Calvinism, hard work and the rise and fall of corporate power will all come to the fore.

My point here is – that there is nothing that we as a collective can do about this, because our times always reflect heaven on earth. The moment that we realise that we are “for” one thing and “against” another, for example, we too are caught up like rabbits in the headlights, which immediately renders us powerless. Like the tides, times come and go, good for some bad for others. Whatever the tide we can only ever work on ourselves – and learn to live with prevailing energies – and ensure in so doing that we do the best for all those around us.  This is not a doom laden attitude – it is a statement of fact. Mystics have always suggested this – that to bend like the willow in the wind or flow like the river around rocks – is the only way to survive until another period of time comes along. This requires effort and yet may be the only way to keep body and soul together with wisdom.
