Listen to your feelings – they know more than you do!
Over the thirty-odd years I have been working in the field of human potential, I have met many people who tell me they want to change their lives. However, on further investigation it soon becomes clear that this may not the whole truth. For mature, responsible people, who have families, careers and commitments, changing all of that is probably a step too far, in most cases, because it isn’t what they really want. What they really want to do is change the things that are no longer working for them and develop the things that are. In other words, to winnow out the rubbish and hold on to the good bits.
It is often suggested that if we keep doing the same-old same-old over and over, the outcome can never be different. However, if we use Jack Canfield’s example of his first “Chicken Soup” book, then the above statement may seem confusing. And it is this confusion that I wish to help with in this article. Jack tried 143 publishers before it was accepted – and the rest is history. And therein lies the rub and this is where belief (I call it “knowing”) comes in – YOUR belief that what you want is right for you. Jack believed, he knew, with every fibre of his being that he was onto a good thing, so he kept on sending the manuscript out, over and over again.
And here’s what you can do – how to stop listening to all those people who say “Why can’t you just be happy with what you’ve got?” and start hearing YOURSELF – your inner voice that can get lost in other people’s disapproval. Think about what you do when you are preparing to take a journey to an unfamiliar place. If your car has Satellite Navigation (SatNav) you tap in your destination, start up your car and leave the rest to the (usually female) voice of your SatNav to keep you on the right track. This allows you to travel in complete confidence that you are going to arrive at your destination, hassle free. She also warns you when you take a wrong turn and works out how you can regain your original route. Clever, eh?
And I can hear you saying “it works in cars and boats – how can I keep on track with my life – what I want to be, do and have in my future?” And I reply that it’s easy – you just have to listen to the voice of your internal SatNav – your FEELINGS! Each time you go off track, resist or lose the plot for any reason, your feelings will tell you. You’ll feel angry, down, bored, or whatever and because you’re human, you won’t listen. You’ll go further and further off track, resist even more, eat ice cream, play computer games, or even go out to play with your friends who are delighted because it makes them happy because they’re just like you – and you’re all resisting together. Remember: resistance loves a friend!
Your SatNav alerts you to the rightness of your route towards getting what it is you want. The further away from your destination the more uncomfortable you’ll feel. Now some people find it difficult to know what they are feeling; however, they will probably “feel” their discomfort physically : they get headaches, an ulcer, a pain in the neck, etc. This is all working internally – and yet, you are being guided throughout your journey towards whatever it is you want, with the power of your emotional energy. Your feelings are so accurate that they can really tell you when you are on course or way, way off your desired destination. So each time you think about whatever it is you want, your emotions will sing with joy , and you can be confident in a successful outcome and so you can persist. If not, if you feel disgruntled, or unhappy then you need to stop at once – and go back to the drawing board to find something that does make your heart sing. Then start working with this new idea and keep listening to your internal SatNav.
Finally, I don’t want to give the impression that I don’t like playing, by the way, that would be too boring for words. Playing for fun is great and it is good for you, playing to divert yourself is not. You get to choose.
