The Cardinal Grand Cross
As anyone interested in Astrology probably knows by now, we are in the middle of the latest eclipse pattern; and slap bang in the depths of the Cardinal Grand Cross that is showing itself in all its power. There is a lot of sabre-rattling going on out in the world at large: Eastern Europe, Russia and Syria all experiencing the most dense level of the energy in terms of aggression and violence.
There are four Cardinal signs: Aries/Libra and Cancer/Capricorn. These signs are called Cardinal because they mark the four seasons – Aries/Spring, Cancer/Summer, Libra/Autumn, Capricorn/Winter. (Please reverse the order for Southern Hemisphere countries.) Therefore these signs demand action: Aries the action of leaping into life; Cancer the action of conservation and keeping things safe; Libra the action of relating, contrasting and comparing; Capricorn the action of building. And it is these actions that are being put under stress by the four heavy planets that are occupying them right now. All four planets are falling at around 13 degrees of each sign this week. They are: Uranus in Aries opposite Mars in Libra and Jupiter opposite Pluto in Capricorn – all square each other, thus making a Cross in the sky – in other words, dividing the sky into four sections.
Since the Grand Cross began to form a few months ago, there have been a number of unrelated accidents that have taken the lives of many poor souls: the Malaysian airliner, the South Korean ferry tragedy, the 14 sherpas killed on Mount Everest and so on. What marks this for me is the large numbers of victims in these accidents. All I can conclude is that the intense energy of the Grand Cross is very hard to bear for us all, so it builds up from individual frustration into a collective event such as the plane and ferry accidents – wherever there are large numbers of people. And yet they still happen in a random way – unpredictable and meaningless.
It is events such as these that we hear about through the various news media and yet can’t understand them. As human beings we like to find patterns that make things fit, so that we can feel safe within ourselves that such events can never happen to us. However, for the people who are caught up in the actual process, we may find a common link, if we knew what we were looking for. it always seems to me that hard aspects show up in the charts of those who are left to deal with the fallout of such a tragedy rather than the actual victims. I suppose that would make sense. And yet we cannot examine the birth charts of everyone concerned before an event occurs. Maybe one day, just not yet in our present climate that cuts us off our connection with the skies.
I think it’s just important to remember that the Universe is never out to get us. However, some random events occur to remind us that we really are not in control of very much at all. Our egos like to have things neatly sorted but I guess life isn’t controllable at all. Things can change in a split second and we never see them coming. That’s how Uranus operates, especially when opposite Mars.
Pluto works in a slower manner, quietly dismantling the buildings and structures that we believe are always going to be there, supporting us and taking care of us (that’s the opposition to Cancer, the sign that takes care of us). We are finding ourselves out in the cold and uncertain about everything we have relied on up to this point in our lives. Pluto opposite Cancer is dismantling family life as well. It is widely reported that earning money (Capricorn) is leaving children (Cancer) to be raised by strangers. The longterm effects of this could be horrendous.
While many people have been writing about this week (around 24th April) as the key moment for this huge aspect to be exact in the sky, I tend to take the view that as the planets are conscious beings, Uranus would know when Mars entered Libra that they would meet up at some point. The exact date and time wouldn’t matter. Similarly when we are born, we “know” when certain planets are going to meet up in our lives offering possibilities and outcomes that our egos know nothing about until they happen.
This Grand Cross has been building up since February 2008 when Pluto entered Capricorn and those who sense the import of such events readied themselves for huge changes that have been unfolding since.
The Solar Eclipse 29/4/2014
We are also halfway between the two week period of the latest eclipse pattern. From the Lunar Eclipse that I wrote about last week and next week’s Solar Eclipse on the 29th April at 8 degrees Taurus.
I was thinking that an eclipse is a little like a heart missing a beat in its rhythm. The light of the Sun is momentarily obscured from the earth and some kind of “click” happens and disrupts the normal pattern of our lives. As always the eclipse patterns operate in an 18 month period and fall across an axis in our charts – so this Solar Eclipse pattern will fall across Taurus/Scorpio from May 2013 to end October 2014. This puts a strong emphasis on wherever you have Taurus/Scorpio on your chart – i.e. the House it falls in.
