The next Solar Eclipse falls on 29.5 degrees of Pisces and will impact those birthdays at the end of Pisces and very beginning of Aries around the date above. It will also have a strong effect on charts with Moon and Ascendant around the same degrees.

For new readers and those of you who have forgotten what creates an Eclipse – it is a function of the position of the Sun and the Moon and their latitudinal relationship on the Zodiac. The apparent path of the Sun around the earth is called the Ecliptic and is divided into 12 Zodiac signs – from Aries to Pisces. The Moon also has a path around the Earth as well and creates its own circle as it does.

When these two cycles dissect each other any New Moon will be occupying the same degree, minute and second of the Zodiac and the Moon being closer to us will cover the face of the Sun and “eclipse” it, i.e. cutting its light from us. There will always be a corresponding Lunar Eclipse either two weeks prior to the Solar event or two weeks following it. These events occur every 5 months or so. The Eclipse of next week will fall on the final half degree of Pisces, then those following through from now until 2017 will occur through both Pisces and Virgo going backwards. The final Solar Eclipse will be at 8 degrees of Pisces in February 2017. Making it a 2 year event across Virgo/Pisces.

An Eclipse will create a shadow across part of the face of the Earth. This shadow will differ depending on the latitude of the Eclipse. This latest Eclipse will fall across the Arctic Circle and down through Ukraine and adjoining countries. Wherever the shadow falls will be highlighted during the year and also for a couple of months prior to the actual cosmic event. We may be concerned by this particular Eclipse shadow as it touches on an area of the globe that is already under pressure. The effect of an Eclipse can last for a couple of years – so we’ll have to see, won’t we?

Eclipses recur every 19 years, returning to the same degrees, so they enable us to get a handle on how they work for us individually. Please note that they always go backwards through the signs – the next nearly 2 years will bring Eclipses, both Solar and Lunar across the Pisces/Virgo axis. A good exercise for you to do would be to get out a notebook and look back to 1996 and even, if you’re old enough, to 1977. Make a list of all the important events, people and issues that were around then and see how you handled them and compare with now. There are likely to be recurring themes so you’ll learn a lot about your way of dealing with life – and with yourself. Do it gently and with compassion – you’ll be amazed how much you’ve developed.

This marks the end of a period of pressure from the various Eclipses over the last 18 months or so for Aries/Pisces natives.

Aries : 21st March – 20th April: You can breathe a sigh of relief as the Eclipse moves out of your 1st House of personal interests and enters your 12th House of learning the hard lessons of putting other people first for a change. Aries thinks in personal pronouns: I, me, mine. Over the last couple of years you have been feeling thwarted and felt you should push even harder to make things go your way. This may not have brought the outcome you expected – forcing you to stop and ask why. All that head banging against the brick wall may have given you quite a headache – so it’s time to take a hard look at how you look after your health, your fitness levels and your hot temper. This could be a good couple of years ahead for you to develop some spiritual, mystical pursuits and maybe even learn to meditate. Write poetry, go swimming, sing, paint, be romantic – and let others lead for a change – you need the break!

Taurus: 20th April – 20th May: The Solar Eclipse falling in your 11th House of prospects, plans, ideas for your future may spur you on to great success over the next couple of years. Your social circle will grow and you will find yourself full of fresh ideas that will include them. The 11th House is filled with groups of people who share your personal outlook in life and who are willing to promote you. Some friendships are likely to fall by the wayside and new people will come in to fill the gaps. Taurus is always concerned about business assets and security – this is the time to watch this part of your life grow and build into your future. It will be up and down for a while, too – but gives a good outcome.

Gemini: 21st May – 21st June: The Eclipse falling in your 10th House of career and public profile will almost certainly bring changes in this area of your life. You may find yourself naturally gravitating towards new goals and career path or the Eclipse will change them for you. Your vocation may no longer hold the same interest it once did, so it could be worth you exploring other options. Your family life could be making more demands that usual, particularly your parents. This could be the time when you have to begin to look at their lifestyle changes and how that impacts your own family life. As this is a long ongoing Eclipse period then you can wait and see how things emerge. And being Gemini that may bore you to death!

Cancer: 21st June – 23rd July: The Solar Eclipse falling in your 9th House of higher learning, long distance travel, beliefs, self-confidence and events concerning your in-laws, can bring all of these issues into high relief over the next couple of years. You may decide to put your travel plans on hold for a while as something else grabs your attention. For those of the right age, a grandchild could unexpectedly be announced, for example, and change your plans. Cancer is both family oriented and is also passionate about crossing water to explore the world – that journey to foreign fields could come up as a necessity as much as for a holiday. You may decide to take a course that grabs your interest then change it at the last minute and do something very different.

Leo: 23rd July – 23rd August: The Solar Eclipse falling in your 8th House of shared resources, savings, insurance and tax will bring some of these matters into high profile for you. Leo is very generous and famously loves to entertain most lavishly especially with friends. The shock can come when you look at your finances and see how much it is costing you – this Eclipse can make you get real and start being a little less open hearted with all and sundry. If a partner is out of work then they may gain employment or be enthused to get out and about looking for a new position. This can ease a lot of your anxieties as you have felt for a while now that it’s all up to you to carry the strain of it all.

Virgo: 23rd August – 23rd September: The Solar Eclipse falling in your 7th House of relationships, marriage and business partners will bring about some changes in this area of your life. This will force you to make concessions in order that you are all singing from the same page. If you are single then you could meet a longterm partner during the next year. Virgo raises criticism to an art form which can be tough for others to endure – so to get through this period you will need to bite your tongue and use patience and understanding with all your relationships and friendships. It may be time to stand your ground when it’s necessary and bring clarity to your situation instead of worrying in ignorance.

Libra: 23rd September – 23rd October: The Solar Eclipse falling in your 6th House brings into high focus all the daily routines and chores, of rhythms and tides, and of the working at the everyday things of life. May not sound very exciting but it is what makes the world go round without falling off into outer space. This is a time to grow your business and pay attention to all the details that come up. Libra can get into a bit of a state if life isn’t in balance and this is the time to find just that – both from outside and inside yourself. Your health must be paid attention to not in an obsessive way but by treating your body the same way as you would treat your garden – with wonder, gratitude and love.

Scorpio: 23rd October – 22nd November: The Solar Eclipse falling in your 5th House of creativity and children can bring huge changes in your relationship with all such matters, particularly if you have had a time of estrangement from any of them. It’s easy to just trundle along and put these important areas of richness in your life to one side thinking they don’t matter. Truth is that they do matter – so get out the paints, that novel, music and the loved ones who haven’t been in touch for a while. Time to connect with your heart centre – 5th House – and enjoy. This is a rich placement for a Scorpio – it may take time but the eclipses will be around in this House for a while to come.

Sagittarius: 22nd November – 22nd December: The Solar Eclipse falling in your 4th House will highlight your domestic situation, elderly family members, your home and your security. You may decide to do a complete make-over within your home or expand by building a “granny-flat” for an older family member. If you work from home, you may decide to make a home office or studio. Property is certainly a major consideration during this Eclipse period – you may even decide to relocate. This is often a time when old issues not dealt with will rear their ugly heads and demand that you do something about them. Therapy is a good answer to help you lay them to rest and live in peace with yourself.

Capricorn: 22nd December -20th January: The Solar Eclipse falling in your 3rd House can bring about a change of mental attitudes towards yourself and your life. You may find that your relationship with siblings, cousins and neighbours goes through a change as well. This is the house of communication and with an Eclipse here you will have to be sure that asserting what you believe to be the truth can be backed up with proof otherwise you could lose out. Your neighbours may leave and the new ones are not as considerate of your needs as they were – or your neighbourhood could go through its own changes by being dug up by your local council. All irritating and frustrating for you to deal with.

Aquarius: 20th January – 19th February: The Solar Eclipse falling in your 2nd House of security, earnings and personal finances will bring some anxieties until you sort out your assets. Your value system may change during this Eclipse time – many of the things you thought were worth fighting for seem no longer worthwhile to you. You could spend a lot of time downsizing, minimalising, and clearing out your living space to suit your new leaner inner you. Aquarius is the idealist of the Zodiac so you may be wondering how to use your income to benefit others – just be careful making that kind of decision, as it is a big one to make in haste and regret in leisure.

Pisces: 19th February – 20th March: The Solar Eclipse falling in your 1st House can give you a huge hit of energy to make massive changes in your life. You may decide to have a complete personal make-over – new hair, new clothes, even a new car – all designed to make you feel newly born for a new life. You may find a new partner, decide to change your job, move house or expand your ambitions. These changes could be far-reaching and life-long, so it is a huge period for you. Travel may be something that takes your fancy – a trip to discover some spiritual sites or a retreat to nourish your soul could be on the cards. and you may not do it alone – how exciting is that?
