Jupiter, Saturn and Mrs Thatcher

It will come as no surprise to anyone on the planet that a Prime Minister of my small United Kingdom died earlier this week.

Briefly, Margaret Thatcher was born with her Ascendant in Scorpio and Saturn rising – a strong, tough and determined personality, with an erotic allure that she used to her advantage. Jupiter in Capricorn was in its Fall (traditionally regarded as a “bad placement”) indicating that expansion and beneficence were always subject to caution and some degree of fear. Her Sun was placed in Libra – also in its Fall – with heavy squares from both Pluto and Jupiter. This would give a bellicose and confrontative nature to her Sun, thus preventing any of Libra’s usual drive to find a middle way and mediate.

Mrs Thatcher always spoke of the influence that her father had on her life, attitudes and values. I can’t remember her ever mentioning her mother – the Moon conjunct Neptune in theatrical Leo gave her a natural ability to “work a crowd”, as they say. So, in Jungian terms she was a woman who was Animus driven, who liked powerful and wealthy men, favoured her son over her daughter; and like Athena, sprang ready formed from her father’s brow. As a dear friend of mine describes it: a worshipper of the Male Sky God.

Yes, she was brilliant; yes, she was determined; however, I would ask, where was the empathy, the sadness that her policies drove some of the population to the edge of starvation? Believe me I’ve seen it at first hand. It is absolutely how the Male Sky God acted in antiquity – and maybe even now in countries run by dictators.

This is in no way meant to be an anti-Thatcher rant – it is simply to show how  Saturn can live up to his own mythology and eat his children. I believe that’s what he did to Mrs Thatcher – ate her humanity.

Now to Jupiter (just to balance things up). FW de Klerk, President of South Africa during the breakdown of apartheid, who released Nelson Mandela, has Jupiter rising in Sagittarius, with his Sun, Saturn, Mercury and Venus all in Pisces, ruled by this rising Jupiter. And this paints a totally different character – a person who is principled, open to new ideas, optimistic and spiritual – in other words, someone who wants the best for everyone.

This shows how the planetary energies/intelligences work through characters of these two influential people. On the one hand, for Mrs Thatcher, it was Saturn – conservative, unable to let go of her childhood or change her attitudes; and for FW de Klerk – it is Jupiter, warm, expansive and freedom loving that motivates his life. Both of these people rose to the top of their countries’ political heights – one brought wealth for a chosen few; and the other brought freedom from an inhumane, restrictive political way of life. However we look at it, they each had a profound effect on their countries for ever, according to the planets involved in their character building.

So, the funeral is next week – and FW de Klerk will actually be there along with many dignitaries. and as is typical with the UK Conservative Party, we, the exceedingly cash-strapped populace will pay for the funeral of this millionairess ex-Prime Minister. It was ever thus!
